Del Rio '95

Del Rio Report

By "Jen"

The big ride of the month was Del Rio!!! This was the first time Wally and I went on the Del Rio ride. We started out Friday morning about 7:10 AM --- first stop Kroger on 290 & the Beltway. There we met up with Mark and Cosmic (Chris) at 7:30 AM. When we arrived, Mark made a comment about our back tire (this will haunt us the rest of the trip). After comments made and deciding the quickest way to get on the Beltway, we were on the road headed to the 76 truck stop in Brookshire --- there we met up with Larry and Tim --- not to mention several other High Rollers from other chapters.

At about 9:10-9:15 Wally & I, Cosmic, Mark, Larry and Tim pulled out onto the open road, all willing and ready to ride for about 75 to 100 miles before stopping again. But wait, what’s this greasy stuff coming from Tim’s bike and landing on Mark? Pull over. We had only been riding for about 15-20 minutes. Tim said that he had changed his oil at about midnight and it was not leaking before he changed it, but it was leaking now. Sitting on the side of the road trying to figure where it was losing oil, we were visited by Big Ray who was on his way to San Antonio --- thanks, Ray, for checking on us! After about 45 minutes to an hour, we decided to get back on the road and go to the nearest gas station where we ended up sitting for another 30 minutes because the station did not carry the right oil and ended up at a farm machinery repair shop where he found something that would work but still wasn’t exactly right. So, on the road again.

Next stop Loves, we gassed up, oiled up, had a smoke and on the road again. When we got to San Antonio we took the 410 south loop. Wally & I and Larry missed the Del Rio exit off the loop. The ride was so nice I guess we were just cruising, went to the next exit to turn around and caught up with the rest of the group who were sitting in a parking lot of a bar, so we had a smoke and discussed going in or finding somewhere to eat. The decision was to find somewhere to eat (DQ in Medina). Food so-so, french fries cold, back on the road again. Next stop Hondo, Texas. Gas up, oil up, pee, on the road. Next stop Del Rio!!! Finally!!! 4:57 PM -  boy, was that a long ride.

Wally & I first stopped at the Honda dealer in Del Rio to get a new tire, then to the Ramada. What a room. TV, VCR, blow dryer, coffee maker, remote not bolted down. We got good use out of the "VCR". Next day we replaced the front tire, got everyone together and rode to the border and took off the helmets. Then off to the rain god. Had a few coolies, took interesting pictures and then a real nice ride through Mexico until the road went from two lanes into four. The road kinda had a raise of about four inches straight up and we hit it hard. Thought for sure we would have a flat, but we didn’t. So off to Crosby’s where we parked the bikes and proceeded to party and shop for about four hours, drinking strawberry margaritas. On the return back to the states we all got through the border okay.

After passing through the border, Mike Meriam and Barbara had a little problem with their bike. Barbara decided to get off. OOPS! Foot stuck and down she went (Barbara that is). Something broke. Oh no! Robin yanked on Barbara’s wrist -   it’s just out of joint. Barbara passed out, let’s yank again. She passed out again - to the hospital. OOPS! Broken, not out of joint. After all the excitement, back to the Ramada. We all went for a little dip in the pool - boy did that feel good!!

Time to eat, clean up and head back to Mexico in taxis to Boys Town. Boys Town, where is it? What happened? Not the same. The best show was Tim. You’ll have to ask him about that??? By 12:00 midnight we were headed back to the Ramada where a few of us went to sleep and a few of us went for a dip in the pool.

The next morning at breakfast talking to Cosmic and Rod Leggett, asking them where they had been all weekend. They proceeded to tell me about their excursion in Mexico where they had rode down this street and ran though a pile of crap! Apparently someone’s plumbing was out and they were shoveling their sewage onto the road (yuck!!!). Now was that a good breakfast conversation or what? We then loaded up, gassed up and headed for home at 10:00. First stop was about 75 miles away. We gassed up, had a smoke or two, posed for pictures for the cops.

Oh no - flat tire. Yes, after replacing both back and front tires, we had a flat. Let’s try fix-a-flat. Didn’t work. Let’s try silicon super glue. That didn’t work either, so we called Jerry and Rod back at the Ramada to let them know to stop and pick us up, so the others left and we waited and waited. We were visited by many passing bikers stopping to see if they could help. Some took pictures of our colors. All were very nice.

We flagged down Steve Craft, Mary, Robin, Mike and Barbara. I left with Mike and Barbara and headed home. I arrived at about 5:30 PM. Wally got home about 8:00 PM. Then we went to Steve, Mary and Robin’s to pick up our stuff they carried for us. Got back home about 9:00 PM. In general, it was a long weekend, the weather was perfect for riding and we all had a great time.
